the medicine of the sun

Study shows Vitamin D deficiency may be linked to COVID-19 mortality - how a common vitamin could become pivotal.

I've been signing the praises of the sunshine vitamin for over a decade and I'm a firm believer in getting your vitamin D directly from safe sun exposure whenever possible. During epidemics, proper levels of Vitamin D are crucial.

People all over the world have been forced indoors, and the more time you spend inside, the likelihood of obtaining a healthy amount of sunlight exposure, and the vitamin produced as a result - vitamin D3 - continues to decline.

Vitamin D deficiency has been called the "silent epidemic", and some experts estimate that as high as 90% of Americans suffer from it.

One of the most important roles of this important vitamin is its role in the modulation regulation of the human immune system.

Go outside, love the sun, it loves you.

Looking For Good News

Tuesday, April 21, 2020

I've committed to keeping one eye on good news and hopeful signs during this crazy time, and as hard as it may be to see sometimes, it's there if you look in the right place. The challenge is being able to translate what you see/read into "good" news.
For instance, I find the latest study from Stanford showing the U.S. infection fatality rate as being much lower than estimated to be good news for us. The study shows that the fatality rate may be more than an order of magnitude lower than the authorities "assumed". "Based on the seroprevalence data, the estimates are the true infection fatality rate is somewhere in the range of 0.12% to 0.2%, far closer to seasonal influenza than the original care-based estimate." Remember, the WHO's estimate case-fatality rate was 3.4%.
(This doesn't deny that Covid-19 is more serious than influenza, it's fiercely infectious and has stretched some hospital capacity and health-care workers as well. "So a path forward demands continued monitoring of seroprevalence as well as new case testing, identifying and protecting those most vulnerable to more serious or even fatal infections, and supporting hospital capacity to handle surges of respiratory intensive-care patients.")
Had policymakers known at the beginning that the death toll would be closer to that of a bad seasonal flu outbreak, then perhaps they wouldn't have risked millions of jobs and livelihoods, not to mention the mental health fall-out from this.
But that is actually good news. Knowing it now, can policymakers begin to change their perspectives and allow a loosening of the draconian measures we now are held to? We should be hopeful of that. The (more) good news is that the science that supports better modeling is rapidly becoming available.
Also good news: worldwide, the percentage of those with Covid-19 considered "mild condition" is 97%. This helps me feel less fearful.
As a wellness professional working within the field of integrative (sometimes called alternative) practices for 20 years, my training and protocols are most often outside of the Western model so I don't look through that lens. My business was founded on the principles of - Enlighten the mind and heal the body. A philosophy that to truly live exceptional lives, each of us must be armed with knowledge that will empower personal authority and health freedom. This means we must be educated and informed. We cannot make appropriate decisions about any aspect of our life without having a balance of information. A healthy body is a natural state of being, it is our birthright. However, in our current age of denatured foods, polluted environments, the emphasis on disease management rather than prevention within mainstream medicine, and pervasive lack of understanding of what defines wellness….it remains elusive for most.
Now my other eye has been and continues to be on the other side of the mainstream narrative as it relates to health. There is a different narrative about this situation! There is an army of health professionals, doctors, and scientists who are painting a different picture and predicting a different outcome than what we are being brainwashed, yes brainwashed, to believe.
Please look into the voices of Dr. Zach Bush MD, Dr. Shiva Ayyadurai, Dr. Joseph Mercola, Dr. Thomas Cowan.... (a number of links are on my page) and more.... There are hundreds of clinicians, physicians, and scientists who are trying to help change the narrative, many of whom are being blocked on social media or shut down on Youtube because their message isn't aligned with the message being broadcast through mainstream channels. There are plenty of experts showing us how the quarantining at this stage isn't necessary, how the use of masks is ineffective and how by taking care of our own physical and mental wellbeing, we are better able to protect ourselves when you do get exposed, assuming you haven't already been exposed.
I understand the challenge of opening your mind to an idea that questions your belief systems. We've been conditioned to look to certain institutions as having our best interests in mind, or of being the authority on all things related to health, but this is your health and wellbeing and only YOU can and should make decisions about your health and life. We cannot make honest decisions without ALL of the information, we have to look beneath the surface and behind the veil. It will take courage to hear the other side of the story.
We are slowly losing our civil liberties here, your health freedom is at stake, for many of us our livelihoods are at risk. And this is happening when it doesn't need to be happening according to many experts. We need to be wondering why we continue to be told that we must be afraid and stay locked down in fear when more and more evidence is pointing to a better more positive story
Why is this good news? Because it means there are many experts and authorities working hard to lift the veil to the truth and in doing so, we can stop being so afraid and get back to living. I find that more hopeful than what we are currently being told is the only way.
The healthcare workers are overburdened in many areas, and yes people are dying, but this isn't new. Sadly millions die every year. Suicide, cancer, traffic accidents, all take more lives than this virus has thus far. We have to keep things in perspective all while keeping our hearts open to support those who lose loved ones for any reason.
I took an oath many years ago that I would uphold the commitment to health freedom and education and fight for what I believe. For me, there is no "head-in-the-sand" with this and I apologize if that offends anyone, but we have to open our minds to seeing EVERY aspect. Once you hear all sides than a more reasonable decision can be made. We can never change another person's perspective, no more than they can of us. We can only open ourselves to considering that there may be another possibility. This is how we evolve, individually and collectively. This is the only way intelligent and civil discourse takes place and reconciliation can be found. Expand your view beyond what you believe.
Protect the vulnerable people in your family, take care of yourself, and above all, stay hopeful and positive.

How can we support ourselves and those we love during trying times?

These are unprecedented times and many of us are feeling uncertainty, fear, anxiety, and deep concern for our overall wellbeing.

My goal with Enlightened Living has always been to empower and inform in the area of holistic wellness.  I have made the commitment to be a source of positivity, insight, and inspiration to my community during this time, in whatever way I can.   I have made a series of videos over the past week to offer you actionable steps in supporting your health and emotional wellbeing, as well as reflecting on how we, as a collective whole can make a difference.  I hope they inspire you and empower you to find a sense of control and hope during these times.

I am here to support you.  I am seeing clients, carefully, in my office as well as via video.  I am offering stress management sessions, private yoga/meditation, and hypnotherapy.  I have had an influx of clients dealing with anxiety and fear, understandably, so I am happy to continue to be available for you in whatever way I am able.

Stay strong, stay healthy, stay positive.

Meeting Challenge

Monday, March 23, 2020

We are experiencing some crazy times right now, no doubt about that. We've had similar situations in our recent history and we've come out strong, remember that.

If you're feeling any anxiety, that's completely understandable, these are challenging times and staying positive can prove very difficult. Uncertainty and fear can take a stronghold of your emotions.

Now more than ever, it's important that we stay calm and come together to get through this latest global health emergency.

More than ever, it's important that we all move forward in the spirit of community, compassion, and positive expectations that we will get through this as soon as possible.

When we feel out of control, it can feel as if the ground beneath us falls away and it can be easy to spiral into anxiety and panic.

This is an opportunity to stop and ask yourself, "what can I control right now?" In the moment, you can control your breathing and your thoughts. On a broader landscape, you can choose how you respond to any situation. You can choose to stay positive. You CAN choose to take care of yourself and practice self-care routines that include yoga, meditation, and breathing.

Nourish your body to keep your immune system strong and this includes reducing your stress. You can turn off the constant stream of negativity and go outside and be in nature. You can call a friend and give each other support. This is a wonderful opportunity to spend more quality time with family and friends. We are being asked to slow down and be present, not rushing from one event after another as is usual with our over-scheduled lives. We have a beautiful opportunity to simply be together and unplug, connect, laugh, and play.

One of the best things you can do for yourself when you're feeling down is to help another, to give of yourself. Check-in on a neighbor or an elderly relative and see how you can help them or if they just need a calming reassurance.

What we each most certainly should be avoiding is feeding into the collective energy of fear. Be a hopeful and bright source of energy for your friends and family.

Things are never as they seem and situations such as this have historically never materialized into the predicted disastrous outcomes. If you are healthy, you are going to be fine. Do your part and remain calm and let's come together in the spirit of community to support one another.

On a spiritual level, the viral spread shows us how profoundly interconnected we are. We are all part of each other and part of this world in ways that we often ignore in easier times. It's sobering to realize that we share our very breath with every creature on this planet.

But it's also inspiring to realize that your breath itself can be a healing power when you fill it with light and send it with kindness into the world.

Adding loving-kindness prayer to your breath when you feel anxious or fearful, "May I be happy, May I be safe, May I be healthy - May my family be happy, may they be safe, may they be healthy - May the people in my community be happy, may they be safe, may they be healthy - May all sentient creatures on this earth be happy, may they be safe, may they be healthy"

This practice is one of the best ways there is to lift the mind beyond fear. And it's good for the immune system!

Every one of us has powerful practices for strengthing our connection to grace and healing. This is a time to use what we know.

So along with taking sensible precautions, Use your mindfulness awareness and noticing where your fear sits in the body and when fear is present, create space around it and breathe through it.

More suggestions:
Spend time drawing in light through the crown of your head and feeling that light penetrating your cells.

Protect your subtle body by creating a balloon of light around your body, protecting yours from negativity as well as external threats such as viruses and pathogens.

Our spiritual practice teaches us that peace and joy are not dependent on external circumstances.

The Buddha taught that suffering is optional, you don't have to go where your mind takes you. You can direct your attention to what needs to be done now with kindness, compassion, patience, self-monitoring, and freedom.

Everyone around us needs this, a level of presence and peace. It's the only way you can make an impact. It's time to put into practice what you've been practicing!

If you attend classes at the studio, I want you to know that I intend to keep classes going.  We are now offering the classes on Zoom. I want to help you stay with your practice when you need it most.  Here is the yoga class schedule.  If you'd like to join, please send me an email and I will forward you the payment link and the class link

Class Schedule:

Tuesdays 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Thursdays 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Saturday 9:00 a.m.

Sunday 3:00 p.m.

Of course, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to meditate every day and I want to help you with that as I am committed to helping you stay calm and grounded during this time. To that end, I have decided to offer daily meditations for you during this time. They are posted on YouTube and on my podcast station

I leave you with the wisdom of Winnie the Pooh

You're braver than you believe,

A pandemic Of Fear

Wednesday, March 18, 2020

Many are feeling threatened and vulnerable.

We've had pandemic scares in the past and we've all experienced natural disaster emergencies, we've even witnessed a terrorist attack in our country. And yet somehow this one seems different. Perhaps it is a more serious threat than we've ever known, or maybe it's how the media is presenting the information.

Regardless of the cause, the reality is, there are millions of people feeling fear and anxiety unlike anything felt before. People are feeling a deep level of uncertainty and lack of control.

These feelings, if left unchecked and fueled by surrounding energy and behaviors, can build into panic and frenzy. We're seeing this happening around us, and this is a bigger threat to our health in the long run.

Fear is a basic survival instinct, and for a short period of time, it's a good thing. However, sustained periods or fear, the physiological effects of the fight, flight, or freeze response wreak havoc on your body.

I am one of many voices trying to be heard, only mine is telling a different narrative. I am trying to get you to believe that you have more power than you think you do, more control over your health than you are being led to believe you have. If we allow ourselves to believe what is being fed to us without allowing even a small bit of doubt, we are in trouble.

Just this morning, I had an interview about the placebo/nocebo effect. (Been the subject of most of my ramblings lately - check out my latest podcasts)
The placebo effect is when we are told something is good for us, a simple sugar pill for instance, and we see real biological changes in the body after taking the pill. This shows us that if we believe the pill is medicine, and we're told it is a powerful cure, it can be.

Just as strong, the nocebo effect. This is where we are told something bad or negative will happen and we see a biological or physiological response from that belief, including death. The placebo/nocebo phenomenon proves unequivocally just how powerful your mind is in controlling processes in your body. But we must be diligent in controlling the messages that we allow into our minds.

And here is where it gets tricky. Trusting the information that is presented to us. What do we believe to be true or real? We live in an age of cognitive dissonance (very Orwellian) created by the deceptive and manipulative use of language via the media or other authority. We hear the sound bites and talking points of political campaigns or media agendas which rarely present the most nuanced perspective on the issues, leaving one completely dependant on those sources for our perception of reality. This leaves one compelled to disregard their own perception in place of the officially dictated version of events.

Subjecting citizens to a non-stop bombardment of negativity and messages of doom, (I can't help but think about how the torture tactics of prisoners of war) are damaging to the collective psyche of the people.

All I want is for you to surround yourself with the belief that you are safe and strong. That you just consider the possibility that you have powers beyond what you currently may believe. That you not only have healing capabilities and strong defense mechanisms that will protect you against any threat that comes your way. But that you also have a direct line to a knowing that will guide you to your truth.

You have a connection to higher wisdom, some call it intuition or instinct, others call it the voice of higher insight or the voice of God. You have an inner guidance system that will tell you what is right for you and what is the truth.

Your inner wisdom will never mislead you. Trusting your voice of higher insight begins with going inward. Turning off the outer noise and tuning in.

Get quiet and present your question, your problem, or desire for clarity. And then go deep, listen and feel.

Connecting with your inner truth feels like a buoy. You will access a sense of peace and calmness that will support you as you navigate these turbulent waters of uncertainty.

I wish to support you. Please visit any of these resources:

The Sunshine Vitamin (Vit D)

Solar ultraviolet-B radiation and supplemental vitamin D have been shown to reduce pandemic fatality rates, which makes sense considering how important vitamin D is for controlling infections and lowering your risk for influenza and the common cold.  Research shows high-dose vitamin D supplementation lowers the risk of respiratory illnesses and lung infections in the elderly by 40%.

Vitamin D can improve the immune system's ability to fight infections because it bolsters the first line of defense of the immune system. Take vitamin D in tandem with Vitamin K2 for optimal health.

Other essential nutrients to support your immune system:

redit to Dr. Mercola)

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) — Encourages glutathione production, thins mucus, lowers your chances of influenza infection and reduces your risk of developing severe bronchitis
Elderberry extract — Known to shorten influenza duration by two to four days and reduce the severity of the flu. According to the authors:29
"Given that elderberry is a very rich source of anthocyanins, there is reason to suspect that its impact on viruses might be mediated, at least in part, by ferulic acid, a prominent metabolite that appears in plasma following anthocyanin ingestion."
Spirulina — Reduces severity of influenza infection and lowers influenza mortality in animal studies. In a human trial, spirulina significantly lowered the viral load in patients with HIV infection
Beta-glucan — Reduces severity of influenza infection severity and lowers influenza mortality in animal studies
Glucosamine — Upregulates mitochondrial antiviral-signaling protein (MAVS), reduces severity of influenza infection severity and lowers influenza mortality in animal studies
Selenium — "Since selenium is an essential cofactor for certain peroxidases, and selenium deficiency has been endemic in certain regions of China and other parts of the world, insuring adequacy of selenium nutrition might also be appropriate in this context," McCarty and DiNicolantonio note, adding:30
"Selenium deficiency also increases the rate at which viruses can mutate, promoting the evolution of strains that are more pathogenic and capable of evading immune surveillance."
Zinc — Supports "effective function and proliferation of various immune cells," lowering mortality in the elderly by 27%
Lipoic acid — Helps boost type 1 interferon response. As explained in a 2014 paper:31
"Type I interferons (IFNs) activate intracellular antimicrobial programs and influence the development of innate and adaptive immune responses … (IFNs) are polypeptides that are secreted by infected cells and have three major functions.
First, they induce cell-intrinsic antimicrobial states in infected and neighboring cells that limit the spread of infectious agents, particularly viral pathogens. Second, they modulate innate immune responses in a balanced manner that promotes antigen presentation and natural killer cell functions while restraining pro-inflammatory pathways and cytokine production.

Third, they activate the adaptive immune system, thus promoting the development of high-affinity antigen-specific T and B cell responses and immunological memory. Type I IFNs are protective in acute viral infections but can have either protective or deleterious roles in bacterial infections and autoimmune diseases."

Sulforaphane — Helps boost type 1 interferon response

Everyday habits can have a negative effect on your immunity

Your lifestyle can affect how well your immune system can protect you from germs, viruses, and chronic illness.  Replacing bad health habits with good ones can help keep your immune system healthy.

It should come as no surprise that washing your hands often, getting enough sleep, and eating a healthy diet are effective ways of protecting yourself against viruses and other germs. What you may not realize is that other factors in your life could be compromising your body’s ability to protect itself.

How you spend your free time, your level of stress, how often you drink, how much physical activity you get, and even the air you breathe can take a toll on your immune system.

Everyone has some stress; it's part of life, but If stress drags on for a long time, it makes you more vulnerable to illness.

Chronic stress exposes your body to a steady stream of stress hormones that suppress the immune system.  You may not be able to get rid of your stress, but you can get better at managing it.  Stress makes the brain boost the production of the hormone cortisol, which impairs the function of infection-fighting T cells.

The top stress busters?  Yoga, meditation, exercise, meaningful connections.

Feeling lonely could impair your immune system, according to a study published in the Journal of Neuroimmunology in December 2014. The research, done on rats, found that increased anxiety associated with loneliness leads to greater suppression of the immune system and more oxidative stress, or damage caused by free radicals.   Having strong relationships and a good social network is good for you.  People who feel connected to friends - whether it’s a few close friends or a large group - have stronger immunity than those who feel alone, studies show.  In one study, lonely freshmen had a weaker immune response to a flu vaccine than those who felt connected to others.

Research published in Psychological Science in February 2015 suggests that simply hugging someone can have a stress-buffering effect and reduce susceptibility to illness.

Sedentary Lifestyle

Over time, too much sitting and avoiding exercise can affect your body’s ability to fight infection, according to a January 2012 study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Regardless of age, gender, and other harmful habits like smoking and drinking, a sedentary lifestyle is tied to an increased risk for premature death. Eventually, inactivity can lead to an impaired immune system, inflammation, and other chronic diseases.  Exercise can boost your body's feel-good chemicals and help you sleep better.

You may have noticed you’re more likely to catch a cold or other infection when you’re not getting enough sleep. Studies help bear out that well-rested people who received the flu vaccine developed stronger protection against the illness.  Not getting enough sleep can lead to higher levels of a stress hormone. It may also lead to more inflammation in your body.

Eating or drinking too much sugar curbs immune system cells that attack bacteria. This effect lasts for at least a few hours after downing a couple of sugary drinks.   A diet high in saturated fat impairs the immune system, and salt and sugar might also have negative effects, according to a review published in Nutrition Journal. Obesity affects the immune system by reducing the number and function of white blood cells needed to fight infection, according to a review in Proceedings of the Nutrition Society. The American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics stresses that good nutrition is essential for a healthy immune system.
Eat more fruits and vegetables, which are rich in nutrients like vitamins C and E, plus beta-carotene and zinc. Go for a wide variety of brightly colored fruits and vegetables, including berries, citrus fruits, kiwi, apples, red grapes, kale, onions, spinach, sweet potatoes, and carrots.  Other foods particularly good for your immune system include fresh garlic, which may help fight viruses and bacteria, and old-fashioned chicken soup.  Some mushroom varieties -- such as shiitake -- may also help your immune system.

Alcohol & Nicotine

Even one bout of excessive drinking can reduce the immune system’s response to invading pathogens.  Alcohol’s major metabolite, acetaldehyde, likely impairs ciliary function in the lungs, making them more prone to bacterial and viral invasion. Alcohol also impairs the process of attacking and breaking down bacteria and viruses.

Whether you’re smoking traditional cigarettes or e-cigarettes, you’re still being exposed to nicotine, which can have harmful effects on your immune system. Nicotine increases cortisol levels while reducing B cell antibody formation and T cells’ response to antigens. Researchers cautioned that e-cigarettes are unsafe because their vapor contains free radicals that can cause airway inflammation and impaired responses to bacteria and viruses.

This one may surprise you....

Too Much Exercise

Being a couch potato impairs your immune system, but the opposite extreme can also take a toll. Too much strenuous exercise, called overtraining syndrome, can be debilitating for the body and make it more vulnerable to infection, according to December 2012 in Acta Clinica Croatica. But a 2014 study suggests that regular, moderate physical activity can make you less susceptible to viruses.

A sudden or tragic event can weaken your body’s immune response, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.  Losing a loved one, for example, can boost the production of nerve chemicals and hormones that increase your risk for more frequent and severe viral infections.  Bereavement is associated with increased cortisol response and immune imbalance, according to a June 2012 review published in Dialogues in Clinical NeuroSciences. Certain vaccines, including the flu shot, may be less effective for those coping with profound loss, according to the NIMH.

Laughing is good for you. It curbs the levels of stress hormones in your body and boosts a type of white blood cell that fights infection.

So in summary, Laugh a lot, get just the right amount of exercise (I would add - do it outdoors for a healthy dose of vitamin D),  limit or avoid alcohol and nicotine, get good sleep, adopt a healthy diet, connect with people, and reduce stress.

At Enlightened Living, we can offer you all of that!!  Stay healthy and happy

How to reach your goals

Wednesday, January 01, 2020

I remember about 8 years ago, early morning on the first day of the new year, reflecting on the year that just past. I realized, with a mixture of sadness and frustration that I had set intentions the year before - big intentions for my business, relationships, and health - and here I sat 365 days later in the exact same place I was a year before. Feeling the same longings, feeling the same discontent. I was no different, and my life was no different.

I realized at that moment how useless vision boarding was, how powerless positive affirmations are, and how willpower alone, even when fueled by a deep desire for change, just isn't enough.

Every year we intend to wipe the slate clean and take charge of our future, to commit to change and growth. We really want to reach our goals, to achieve great things, to make a difference and live a life of purpose and passion. We really long to break free of bad habits and unhealthy patterns.

And we start off with enthusiasm and we may even begin to gain traction. Then before we know it, we're back in the old habits, doing the same things and feeling the same feelings. It's frustrating to keep reaching for our goals only to revert back to those old conditioned habits and behaviors.

And then I realized something very powerful.  It's not that our desires aren't deep enough or strong enough, that we don't want them enough. It's not that we don't deserve what we want, there isn't some old karma that is working through our life and now we're being punished (that's not how karma works).   It has nothing to do with "not being in our cards" to have what we desire.  Just because I was born into this situation or circumstance does not mean I have to repeat it or stay in it... I most certainly have the power to rise above it.

We are doing everything right.  We are listening to the longings we feel,  we are honoring the voice of higher awareness that tells us we deserve the dreams in our heart.  We are stating our intentions to the higher powers of creative energy and we are making it very clear that we desire the change that is yearning to take place.  We have been told that in order to change our personal reality, we must change our thinking.  We have been told that we can manifest whatever we want if we just think it and visualize it happening.

As I sat there that morning, 8 years ago, frustrated and doubting what I had so strongly wanted to believe, wanting to believe all of the spiritual texts I had studied for over a decade, and wanting to believe in the law of manifestation and abundance, a powerful realization occurred to me.  I realized that we were doing it all wrong.

You see, about that same time, I was stepping into an obsession that continues today... the field of neuroscience.  I had already been working with the deeper states of consciousness with my work in hypnotherapy, but the latest insights from neuroscience were giving deeper understandings into the mind, thought, and the brain.

And what was crystal clear to me at that moment was that change, real change, had to happen at the deeper levels of consciousness.  If we try and create change by changing our conscious thoughts then we would be doomed to revert back to the familiar ways of thinking and behaving.

The truth is that only a fraction of our thoughts are generated by the conscious mind. The more powerful mind, and the part of the mind that controls your habits and behaviors is the subconscious mind.  The subconscious mind is the mind that was programmed early in your life to believe certain things about yourself, what you deserve, and what you can and can't do.  And your beliefs, habits, and behaviors will be generated by that programming regardless of how much you want something consciously - until the programming is changed.

Just like the computer on your desk.  Unless you update the programming, it will run on outdated programming.

If you desire a loving relationship but your programming has you believe you aren't worthy of love, then your subconscious mind and it's programming will allow only what it knows.  Your conscious mind cannot override the programming.

That's why our goals and dreams are oftentimes never met.  We long for change and attempt to will our way toward it with our conscious efforts, but the subconscious programming simply won't accept the request.  It hasn't had the new programming downloaded.

That epiphany launched an experiment with my own life.  I spent the next year working on updating my programming - the programming of my subconscious mind.  As I programmed the desires and goals I had written down for myself into my deeper consciousness as if they were what I already knew to be true, and as if I absolutely deserved them, they started to manifest.

As my mind began to believe that what I wanted was possible, then, and only then, did my thoughts change.  And when thoughts change, reality will indeed change.  But only thoughts that come from a deep belief, and belief is the realm of the subconscious mind.

So, if your desires, goals, and dreams are not manifesting, that's not a sign to give up.  It's an indication that your deeply held beliefs about having that dream aren't congruent with your conscious desires.

You must first change at a deeper level of consciousness.

And so I spent the next 6 years creating a system for transformation based upon that experiment with myself.  And I call it LifeDesign.

The underlying principle of LifeDesign is that what is within you is greater than any circumstance in your life.  And for the past few years, this program has helped hundreds of people move from being stuck and unfulfilled to living a life of freedom and success.

If you'd like to know more about it, check it out  here

I began by coaching people privately, which I still do.   But I wanted to make it more affordable and be able to reach more people than one-on-one coaching allows me.  And I am happy to announce the launch of my online version of the LifeDesign coaching program.

This online version allows you to work through the program at your own pace and make your own schedule, but it still provides for deep and powerful change.   I am so excited about this program and this online coaching format...

please check it out and let me know what you think!!   I want you to live the life you dream of, and I want 2020 to be your year of transformation.

As always, I am grateful to you

Dreams + Goals + Action = New Life

Wednesday, January 01, 2020

Many people put their dreams on the back burner on an ongoing basis.

They put the needs of others before their own, or keep telling themselves that "someday" they'll dust off their dreams and begin transforming their reality.

Make 2020 the year you focus on your dreams!

Taking care of our responsibilities and caring for others is important, it's also important to invest time in exploring and pursuing what makes YOU feel happy....

Because, when YOU are living the life of your dreams, the JOY and ALIVENESS you feel elevates those around you... and as you inspire others to pursue their dreams, the entire world changes for the better.

Each year many of us take time to reflect and commit to some change or growth in the coming year. Perhaps you do as well. We resolve to finally reach a goal or make a change that we've been thinking about all year or, as often happens, we set the same goal as the one we set the previous year and say "This time, I'm going to do it!"

But for many of us, as we take time to consider what it is we would like to change, or what it is we would like to try, have, do, or become....we begin to realize that we are not at all sure what the dreams of our heart are. We've never really defined the longings and discontents we feel. We just know we want something different.

You see, life is always seeking growth. Your life is always seeking a freer, fuller, more expanded version of what you've's a natural process.

But when we ignore that pull to grow, we feel unsettled and stuck and we just continue to live the life we've known. We call that living by default.

However, you are a powerful co-creator of your reality and you have the power to create a greater life, filled with more joy, more purpose, prosperity, and freedom. That is called living your life by design. You truly do have the power to create and manifest the dreams of your heart.

The first step is getting clear about what you want. If you don't know what you want, you will never find the path to greater freedom, passion, and purpose? As they say, no wind is favorable to a sailor with no destination. Your creative powers mean little if you don't know how to direct them.

For the past decade, I have been helping my clients get crystal clear on the dreams in their hearts, and then help them to remove the mental blocks that are keeping them from achieving those dreams.

I have created a powerful and proven system for defining, designing, and then building your dream life. I'd love to introduce you to LifeDesign.

by the end of 2020, you could be living the life of your dreams

Or, you could be living the same life that you're living now. The choice is yours.

The Myth and Mystery of Hypnosis

Friday, December 20, 2019

"I heard everything you said, so I don't think I was hypnotized" A new client recently told me this after his first session.

This is not an uncommon reaction and it's one of many myths surrounding the therapeutic process of hypnotherapy.

I suspect one of the reasons many people feel apprehensive about trying hypnosis is due to their misunderstanding of what hypnosis is and isn't.

Let me bust a few myths.

1. Hypnosis is not sleep. When you are in a hypnotic state, you are fully aware of your surroundings, but another part of your mind is focused elsewhere. This is why you feel surprised when you pull into your driveway and say "Wow, I hardly remember how I got here, I was so zoned out on the drive home."

In this case, you got in your car and your subconscious mind knew just how to drive the car and how to navigate the way home. Your subconscious mind knows this familiar process because it was trained a long time ago and now it's basically a habit. But on this day your conscious mind was preoccupied with a problem to solve or on some other subject so it was busy working that out and all the while, your subconscious mind was in the driver's seat.

That's why you hardly remember the drive home, your conscious mind was busy working out the problem (or talking on the phone), so your subconscious mind takes over a job it has been trained to do. You may have not been fully aware of the drive home, but you certainly weren't asleep.

Hypnosis is a state of mind you go in and out of many times per day. A trance state is simply a shift in the brain wave activity, and your brain fluctuates between Beta, Alpha, and Theta wavelength throughout the day. Alpha and Theta waves are registered when you are daydreaming, meditating, relaxing, or zoning out (we call that trance).

During hypnosis, you are deeply relaxed and your mind may wander and not really be paying attention. You sometimes feel a 'far away' feeling, but it is not sleep.

2. Hypnosis is not mind control.   This is a big misconception, thanks to Hollywood. Stage hypnosis shows may also give the impression that the hypnotist is controlling the mind of the volunteers.  In the case of the stage hypnosis shows, the participants up on stage are willing participants and have agreed to put their beliefs on hold for entertainment. If they are doing crazy things on stage while in a hypnotic trance, they may appear to be under the control of the hypnotist, but the truth is, they would willingly behave like that in public even if they weren't in a stage hypnosis show, they have that type of personality.

For someone like me, who doesn't feel comfortable with that kind of extroverted behavior or being the center of attention, that would never work with me.   I can be hypnotized, but not in a situation like that.

Hypnosis is 100% voluntary, in fact, we say that all hypnosis is self- hypnosis. No one can hypnotize you. A hypnotherapist guides you into a natural, deeper state of mind for the purpose of helping you change some problematic behavior, habit, or belief that is getting in your way or limiting your life in some way. But you willingly choose to have the experience. Once you suspend your belief and allow your imagination to open, hypnosis comes easy.

3. You cannot get stuck in hypnosis.  Again, hypnosis is a natural state of mind, an experience you have many times per day. Just as you can easily pull yourself away from a day-dream, you can just as easily pull yourself up from a hypnotic trance.  Although, when experiencing hypnosis in a formal setting, it is such a deeply relaxing experience, many people don't want to leave that wonderful state of relaxation. But they always do :)

4.  "I can't be hypnotized", or "I tried it and it didn't work."  I hear these often.  Again, hypnosis is a natural state and each of us experiences hypnosis throughout the day.  When you are waking in the morning or falling asleep at night, your brain moves through a Theta brainwave level, that state of suspension where your half in dream world and half in awake world, you know that feeling!  When someone tells me that can't be hypnotized I ask them if they never sleep and then tell them that if they sleep, they've experienced hypnosis on the way.

However, in order to experience hypnosis in a formal setting, there must be a relationship of trust between the therapist and you.  A therapist should be skilled at making your comfortable with the process and with them.  They should answer all of your questions and explain the process as well as clear up any misconceptions and concerns.  If that doesn't happen and you have any of the above beliefs, it is possible that you may not allow hypnosis to happen, but you are most certainly hypnotizable.

I have found that the first session for many people is a very light experience.  They may be very critical thinkers, or what we call 'analyzers', those with strong minds, and they are not fully relaxing.  These people may enter a light state of hypnosis or simply relaxing deeply but not entering the subconscious mind.  In these instances, deep change work is likely not going to happen. However,  after one or two sessions when they are comfortable with the process, they are able to go very deep into hypnosis and the changes they are looking for can happen.

I would encourage anyone who has never tried hypnosis or has had only a brief experience with it, to continue exploring this powerful therapy.  I have found nothing more effective, permanent, or powerful than hypnosis.  It is gentle, comfortable and has zero negative side effects.

I have specialized in using hypnosis for trauma and chronic illness, but I see clients for everything from depression/anxiety to weight reduction, habit elimination to sports improvement, and hypnosis is far and above the best stress reduction technique available.

If you are curious, I encourage you to treat yourself to a hypnosis session...your future self with thank you!
